Small group of papers documenting Charles Butts, editor of the Mississippi Free Press, a newspaper advocating for civil and human rights. Includes typewritten pages written for the paper and for publicity, articles about Charles Butts, copies of the Missisippi Free Press (1962-1963), copies of The Reporter (1962, 1963) containing civil rights articles, and "Justice", a civil rights brochure.
A Military Life (Col. Johnnie P. Byrd Collection)
This collection covers nine cubic feet and ranges from 1916-2013 with the bulk the material dating from 1957-1986. It consists of scrapbooks, correspondence, photographs, certificates, insignia, patches, medals, awards, books, film reels, DVDs, uniforms, and an ammunition shell. The collection contains six standard cubic foot boxes and three small oversize boxes.
Elvira Byrd Papers
Papers consist of the family correspondence of Elvira Rea Byrd, (1843-1930), who founded the newspaper the Brookhaven News in 1887. In addition to Brookhaven, places represented include Oakley and Parchman penitentiaries, where Stanley Byrd was a pharmacist; and Santa Ana and Brownwood, Texas. Also included are 3 letters from Congressman Ethelbert Barksdale.
